How a Marketplace Works

Understand the workflow of a standard Marketplace

The concept of an online marketplace, is to allow customers to seamlessly purchase from multiple stores (vendors) a single website transaction with ease. There are 3 typical roles for the running of the site:

  • Customers: These are the end users / target market of the marketplace. The success of the marketplace will hinge on making the website as easy to use as possible, and the timely delivery of their orders.
  • Vendors: These are the various stores who are selling their products on the marketplace. They provide products or services, and usually responsible for fulfilling the orders received.
  • Marketplace Owners: These are the people who are responsible for running the marketplace, and setting everything up for Vendors and Customers.

The marketplace can be tailored to a single industry, specific target audience, or can be general for all customers to buy publicly.

Below is an example of a standard buyer workflow from purchase to vendor payouts.

The management of orders, shipments and payouts can vary from website to website.
